It All Stared With A Slice
NY Slice Pizza began with a dream. Founder Mark Francis, once an accountant working long hours in Manhattan’s towering office buildings, often found comfort in a classic New York City pizza slice. One evening, while savouring that cheesy perfection, Mark realised something was missing back home in South Africa: authentic NY-style pizza by the slice. Determined to change that, Mark set his sights on bringing a slice of New York to Cape Town. In 2013, he took the leap, swapping spreadsheets for dough, and opened the first NY Slice store on Kloof Street.
But it wasn’t an easy journey...
Mark knew little about making pizza, so he went straight to the source—New York City. There, he worked in some of the city’s most iconic pizzerias, flipping dough, delivering pies, and perfecting his craft. Under the guidance of renowned pizza chef Federico, Mark honed his skills, learning the secrets of creating the perfect pizza.
After months of hard work (and a few burns along the way), Mark returned home, ready to share his authentic recipe. Today, NY Slice stands as a testament to his passion and perseverance, bringing the taste of NYC to South Africa, one slice at a time.

The First Slice
Mark poured his heart into renovating his first store, doing much of the work himself. From long days of carpentry to sleeping on a foam mattress under the oven, his dedication never wavered. When the doors finally opened, Cape Town fell in love with NY Slice from the very first bite. The overwhelming support and love for the brand fueled its growth in the years to come.
